4 steps to finding your signature style

Now that summer sales are in full swing, it is tempting to add a lot of new pieces to your wardrobe.. especially when you’re on vacation and you see the sign SALE popping up everywhere..Reduced prices..further reductions..sale up to 50%.. It’s easier to get the urge to shop when you know something is on sale, right?

Sale shopping is fun and it can save you a lot of money too (if you do it right). But there’s also a dark side. In my early to mid 20s, I always ended up with a bunch of “unnecessary” things, particulary shoes, makeup and clothes. At that time, it didn’t matter much to me. I wanted to experiment with different types of clothing, loads of prints, colours and textures.

We all know your personal style says something about you. It’s a way to express who you are. When it comes to my style, it has changed over the years and I believe it keeps changing, based on the lifestyle I’ve been living. Finding my personal style was a struggle to be honest. It took me years to understand what style suits me best. Fast forward to today, I think it’s safe to say that I finally found one that reflects my personality and where I feel most comfortable in. Simple, classic and comfotable. I’d choose sneakers over heels, oversized tops over bodycon fit, trousers over pencil skirts. Comfort is essential to me. So today I’d like to talk about a few tips on how I found my signature style and how I sticked to it.

1// create a colour, pattern and texture palette

This may sound obvious, but try to find colours that represent you as a person, colours that suit your skin tone, hair, body and even your lifestyle. Think of your favourite colours, colours that tell something about you, affect your mood or make you feel happy. By creating a colour palette, you’ll be able to focus on the colours you like and that will help you to define your style better. Plus, it makes shopping easier too. The same goes for prints, and textures. When it comes to print, I like breton stripes. I’ve been wearing them for years. Stripes are simple, timeless and they just add a stylish touch to your outfit without trying too hard.

2// declutter and reorganize your closet

I know you wouldn’t believe me if I say “I have nothing to wear”. I know, how can I say something ridiculous when I own a closet, a storage room which we’ve transformed into my ‘walk-in closet’ and a part of Wai’s closet? Yes, I own way too many clothes. When Wai started to complain about lack of closet space (he: ‘I can’t even find my own clothes!’), I knew it was time to declutter and reorganize my wardrobe. I never thought I could free up so much more space by simply getting rid of clothes I no longer wear! And you know what the good part is? Decluttering makes you feel happier and stress-free. Plus, you’ll only wear the clothes you love! win-win.

3// dress for your body shape

This is so important, my friend. I’m a firm believer that anyone can wear whatever they want as long as it fits his or her body. Remember what I said about choosing the right denim skirt or stripes and polka dots for your frame? Dressing for your body shape will certainly make you feel confident in what you wear and I believe it will help you to make the right decisions too. When you look good, you feel good, you do good. Make sure you wear the clothes and not let them wear you.

4// invest in timeless pieces

Having a strong wardrobe is essential when you want to find your signature style. You’ll need items that can be easily paired together and are suitable for (almost) any occasion. These items are the so called basics. I’m a massive fan of good basics. They are timeless, versatile and last for a lifetime and you know what? They are also an easy starting point to build an awesome, classic wardrobe.

What is your signature style?

Great tips, and yes, I completely agree with number 3 and 4. What works and looks good for others doesnt necessarily mean it looks good on you. Take time to explore, it’s a trial and error thing. More importantly, have fun searching for your own style!

These are all such great tips! I’ve definitely been guilty of being on a trip, seeing sale signs, and thinking I need to add some more items to my wardrobe. I love the idea of sticking to a palette of colors and patterns that you love and make you happy. Also you are so right that decluttering does wonders! I recently went through my closet and it feels so good not being overwhelmed when choosing an outfit.
